Is raw sugar any better for me than regular sugar?

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

No. Except for a slight difference in color, they’re the same thing. In fact, unless you’ve actually been to a sugarcane field and sucked on a fresh stalk, you’ve never had true raw sugar. That’s a good thing. “It contains impurities [dirt and decomposition] that make it unsafe to eat,” says Lisa Tartamella-Kimmel, M.S., R.D., the outpatient nutrition coordinator at Yale-New Haven Hospital, in Connecticut. The “raw” sugar served up in little brown packets is, in fact, what’s left after the cane juice evaporates and impurities are removed. Further processing turns it into the white table variety, but the nutritional value does not change. All sugars have 16 calories and 4 to 5 grams of carbohydrates per teaspoon. “People assume that processing affects sugar in the same way it affects grains,” says Tartamella-Kimmel. “It doesn’t. Gram for gram, sugar is pure carbohydrate—no matter which variety you choose.”

Why do women crave chocolate during their periods?

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

There have been suggestions that chocolate cravings are related to a deficiency of magnesium or are linked to carbohydrate consumption to self-medicate depression, but no strong evidence has been found. Nutritional deficits are not necessary for cravings to occur. These desires appear to stem more from a psychological need.

Medical texts, however, are filled with fascinating stories about bizarre “food” cravings. Pica is the medical term for a pattern of eating non nutritive substances (dirt, clay, paint chips, and the like) that lasts for at least 1 month. The name comes from the Latin word for magpie, a bird known for its large and indiscriminate appetite. Iron deficiency can cause pica and can also cause a craving for ice, referred to as pagophagia.

ROAST POTATOES are deliriously different if peeled potato sections are placed in a plastic bag into which you have emptied a packet of your favorite “soup in a cup” mix. Shake the bag for a few seconds until potatoes are well covered in the soup mix, then put them on a lightly oiled oven tray and roast until the coating becomes crisp.

WHEN FRUIT on your trees is just beginning to ripen, toss a few strips of silver Christmas tinsel over the branches. This not only deters all birds, it looks pretty as well.

SEW A MAGNET into a potholder so it always can be attached to the stove where you need it.

TO RESTORE a discolored wooden chopping board, soak it overnight in water to which has been added half a cup of bleach. Next day, rinse well in very hot water, allow to dry completely, then give it a good sandpapering all over, including the edges. Rinse again in cold water.

IT IS EASY to make damp collectors, to reduce mould and odor caused by moisture in drawers and wardrobes. Put four tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda in a paper bag, fold one end to close it, then seal with adhesive tape. Place the filled bags where needed and replace every six months or so.

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD makes a great keeper for knitting needles. Thread them in graduated sizes into the “tubes” in the cardboard, write the size next to each pair, roll and secure with a rubber band.

SOFT STALE BISCUITS, not iced or cream-filled, can be restored quickly to their former crispness. Spread them out on a scone tray and heat in a 135-140C oven for about 10 minutes.

RENEW ELASTIC quickly in waistbands, ankles or cuffs. Just attach the new elastic to the old in the garment, then pull out the old elastic. The new will follow through as you pull.

IF YOUR DOG loves retrieving a ball but you find it hard to throw it far enough because of age, stiff shoulders or whatever, use an old tennis racket and hit the ball. It goes much further than you could throw it and your dog gets plenty of exercise.

STAINLESS STEEL cutlery that has dulled can be brightened again. Using a soft cloth dipped in lemon juice, rub each piece well. Then wash in hot, soapy water with a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda added. Dry well.

SHOE POLISH, when dried-out or broken, can be warmed gently until it melts and reforms. If very dry, mix in a little cooking oil while it’s still hot.

VEAL CUTLETS can be given a lift and a distinctive flavor if coated with crushed cheese biscuit crumbs instead of breadcrumbs.

Do Kegel exercises really work?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Kegel exercises were originally developed as a method of controlling incontinence in women following childbirth. They’re named after Arnold Kegel, the Los Angeles doctor who promoted their development in the 1940s. The principle behind Kegel exercises is to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor (namely, the pubococcygeus muscles). These muscles run from the back to the front of a woman’s pubic bone and encircle the openings of the vagina and rectum. Strengthening them helps improve the urethral and rectal sphincter function.

These exercises are recommended for women with urinary stress incontinence, but many others do Kegel exercises for more fun. Advocates believe that there are several benefits for a woman who exercises her vagina. They claim that it makes it easier for her to reach orgasm, makes orgasms stronger or better, and makes the vagina more sensitive.

Is sperm nutritious?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

You are what you eat. In this case, it is somewhat true, as sperm contains important genetic material. But sperm is not particularly nutritious or fattening. The average ejaculate, about 1 teaspoon, contains between 200 and 300 million sperm. Total calories: about 5. These calories are derived from proteins (including enzymes) and sugars (mainly fructose) secreted into semen by the prostate gland to provide the sperm with the energy to swim.
Other good stuff found in semen includes water, vitamin C, citric acid, phosphate, bicarbonates, zinc, and prostaglandins.

Why do men have nipples?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

We are mammals and blessed with body hair, three middle-ear bones, and the ability to nourish our young with milk that females produce in modified sweat glands called mammary glands. Although females end up with the mammary glands, we all start out with them as embryos. During development, the embryo follows a female template until about 6 weeks, when the male sex chromosome kicks in for a male embryo. The embryo then begins to develop all of its male characteristics. We are left with nipples and also with some breast tissue. Abnormal enlargement of the breasts in a male is known as gynecomastia. (Some people call them “bitch tits.”) Gynecomastia can be caused by using anabolic steroids. So if Barry Bonds shows up at an old-timers game with 44DD man boobs, then I think we will finally have our answer to the steroid controversy.
