Buy used college books
Sunday, November 30th, 2008If you go to any campus bookstore, you may be shocked at the prices of books these days. Paying $500 for books for one semester has become the norm rather than the exception. There are alternatives, however. Let’s take a look at what they are.
There are a number of online book stores where you can purchase used college books for about half the price. Moreover, you can sell books online as well.
Here are some examples:
A college biology textbook costs, on average, $135.00. However, you can save quite a bit of money buying a used book at a price of $36.00. A psychology book sells at $83.00, but is available used for a price of $49.00.
Here is another perfect example of how much the costs of college textbooks have risen over the years:
In 1991, the cost of “The Riverside Chaucer” textbook purchased at a local college bookstore cost $60.90. Today, this book is selling for $97.56 online. Used, you can purchase it for $33.88.
Seventeen years ago, purchasing books at a college bookstore was an added expense, but a necessary one. Buying a new book seemed appropriate at the time since most of the used books had pages torn or missing and notes written on almost every page. For a first time college student, being able to buy a brand new book was exciting.
Today, however, just being able to find a book for under $50.00 is exciting. For most students who attend college, the price of a textbook is so high that as long as all of the pages are intact, used books are the only option.
The internet serves a useful purpose for college students today. In the early 90s we didn’t have the luxury of tapping into online bookstores that offered low prices for textbooks.
With the price of tuition at an all-time high, especially for students who attend colleges out of state, it is necessary to find cost-effective solutions wherever you can. By purchasing used textbooks, some savings can be realized.
It should be noted, however, that books are a precious commodity. Perhaps the powers that be who are trying to find ways to cut tuition costs can deliberate on finding a way to cut the cost of textbooks as well.
