Sarah Michelle has a lot to be secure about, with the success of Buffy and the horror-flick hits / Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2. Not to mention the risque thriller Cruel Intentions with Ryan Phillippe. But perhaps her most scintillating role is one she hasn’t signed for yet: There’s talk of her jumping back on the fear train in the sequel to The Silence Of The Lambs.

How are you not like Buffy?
I’m more focused and more confident than her. But then when Buffy runs into horrible monsters, she has this great optimism. So when I feel sorry for myself, I just think, “What kind of quip would Buffy come up with here?” and that helps.

A dedicated student who graduated from a New York performing arts high school, Sarah Michelle was spotted by a talent scout at five, starred in her first commercial that same year, and worked in her first TV movie when she was six. At 11, she played opposite Matthew Broderick on Broadway, then at 15 she was the bitchy Kendall Hart on the US soap All My Children, a role she won an Emmy for in 1995. But then, amid rumours of friction with her TV mum, she quit and moved to Hollywood at 17.
