Why do some guys’ faces get so enormous as they age?

There are a lot of myths regarding why men gain weight in their faces, including excess alcohol consumption and the effects of aging. But really, it’s all about genetics and weight gain. If you’re predisposed to store fat in your face, then that’s where it’s going to go. Plus, the first place you notice weight gain is in your face, because it’s your identity. William Shatner looks so puffy and pumpkin like on Boston Legal because we remember how lean he looked in his Star Trek days. “The good news is that the first place you gain weight is the first place you lose it,” says Steven Aldana, Ph.D., a professor of lifestyle medicine in the College of Health and Human Performance at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. “You can lose weight in your face by reducing body fat, which means cleaning up your diet and increasing your physical activity.”

So rather than choose plastic surgery, try losing pounds. For quick weight loss, start circuit training, a strength-training technique in which you move from exercise to exercise with no rest in between. A recent study at the University of Southern Maine found that just one circuit of eight exercises can burn 231 calories (71 percent more than previously thought). Alternate upper-body movements (dumbbell chest presses, bent-over rows, hammer curls, triceps extensions) with lower-body and ab exercises (lunges, squats, crunches, back extensions). Complete three circuits of eight exercises three times per week with 1 minute rest between circuits.
