Puberty and dirty magazine
I am 18 and my younger brother is 14. He is going through the hell of puberty and since my parents are conservative to the point of silence, I don’t think he’s had that “father and son chat” which is so important. I have found a dirty magazine in the bathroom I share with him and am concerned that he is getting his knowledge about sex and sexuality from sources that are not going to serve him well in the future. Having dated some guys who I’m certain learned about sex this way, I know this isn’t the right path to go down. What can I do to help him?
answer:
As admirable as your intentions are, no 14-year-old boy with spontaneous erections and secreted porn is going to open up to his sister about what he is going through. The best solution here is to broach the subject as an invitation: “I know mum and dad can be tough to talk to, but I’m here if you ever want to discuss anything.” Truth be told he probably won’t take you up on this but it’s the ideal platform from which to send him in the direction of some good educational resources that aren’t pornographic - a valid concern, might I say.
