Bleeding between periods

If you’re seeing red in-between your periods, check out these possible causes and what you can do:

You’ve just started a hormone-based birth control.
Going on the Pill can sometimes trigger spotting as your system adjusts to the synthetic hormones. If the amount of blood is more than just a spot or lasts longer than three months, see your gynecologist.

You had “rough” sex. A spot of bright red blood may be a sign that a tiny tear in your vaginal wall or cervix occurred during intercourse. The bleeding should stop in a few hours, and the tear should heal on its own.

You have an STD. Light, intermittent bleeding can be a symptom of chlamydia or gonorrhoea. (Other signs include pelvic pain, thick yellowish discharge, although many women have no symptoms.) If you’ve had unprotected sex, get tested.

You’re pregnant. Up to 25 percent of women experience spitting early in their first trimester. Take a home pregnancy test to allay your doubts.
