The quest for safer cosmetics

Scary but true: One out of every 100 personal-care products-including those for kids—contains a known carcinogen. And companies are now pledging to do something about it. More than 550 cosmetics and body-care companies have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, promising to eliminate toxic ingredients like mercury, lead, and formaldehyde that may be used in products like shampoo, deodorant, soap, and baby powder. They’re also working to replace these ingredients with safer ones within three years. “We’re thrilled that so many companies are interested, but we’d like to see bigger brands get on board,” says Stacy Malkan, spokesperson for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
