Diabetes; What I should be ready for?

My mum has just been diagnosed with diabetes. She’s 53 years old. My friends are worrying me because when I told them of her condition, they started telling me about all these things I should be prepared for, like blindness and paralysis. They say she’s basically doomed. Is that all true? One of my friends says she has a cousin whose uncle actually lost use of his legs! I hate the thought of my mum suffering. Can you tell me what I should be ready for?

answer:
To have diabetes is not the end of the world. If your mum’s health and diet are properly managed and her blood sugar levels are kept under control, she can lead a normal life. She must learn how to monitor her blood sugars on her own. Of course everyone around her must offer support too and help her avoid eating too much carbohydrates and generally watch her food intake. She’ll have to learn new eating habits, perhaps eating smaller meals more often in a day rather than having three large meals. If her diabetes is severe, she also needs to avoid injuries. In case she does get one, she must see a doctor right away for antibiotic coverage.
