What are the other causes of bad breath and how can I stop it?
My boyfriend sometimes complain that I have bad breath. Is this due to the food I eat? What are the other causes of bad breath and how can I stop it?
answer:
What you eat does affect the air you exhale and the odour that your breath emits. Certain foods, such as garlic and onions, contribute to unpleasant breath odour. Once the food is absorbed into the bloodstream, it is transferred to the lungs, where it is expelled. Brushing, flossing and mouthwash will only mask the odour temporarily as you’ll continue to breathe it out until the body eliminates the food. If you don’t brush and floss daily, particles of food remain in the mouth, collecting bacteria, which can also cause bad breath. You should see your dentist who can help identify the cause and, if it’s due to an oral condition, develop a treatment plan to help eliminate it. For example, bad breath can be caused by dry mouth, which occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Saliva is necessary to remove particles that may cause odour. Tobacco products too cause bad breath. Also, bad breath may be an indication of a medical disorder, such as a local infection in the respiratory tract, chronic sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, diabetes or gastrointestinal disturbance. If your dentist determines that your mouth is healthy, you may be referred to your doctor who’ll help you determine the cause.
