Eczema needs a long-term treatment
My skin seems to have developed an unusual sensitivity within the last six months. I break out into an itchy rash on my arms and legs very easily —sometimes in the form of raised red bumps, and other times, it’s one big red patch. It gets unbearably itchy and the topical creams that my doctor prescribed didn’t help at all. I thought that it might be a food allergy, so I’ve cut out seafood and beef from my diet, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. What could be causing my rash?
answer:
You have made a self-diagnosis of what appears to be increased sensitivity to something you have touched or eaten. This is actually a form of allergic reaction. When the symptoms are prolonged, you may find that the affected area reacts with increased pressure, like with the elastic bands of your pants or underwear, causing a more severe rash. This is called eczema and needs a long-term treatment. It can be very itchy, and when scratched, will swell further. Eczema is associated with dry skin as well. You will need a good moisturiser. Do also bathe with special non-alkaline soaps to decrease your skin’s sensitivity. If you are interested to find out what you are allergic to, call up the Skin Centre and get a skin patch test done. Once the culprit is identified, you may have to stay away from it for life.
