Is there any way I can get out of family annual holiday?

My family goes on an annual summer holiday, but I really don’t think I can take it this year. I know what’s going to happen - we’re all going to eat too much food, get sunburnt, shop until our bags burst (this bit I like) and argue about everything! My brother is such a brute that we just fight constantly. He seems to get his thrill from teasing me about all sorts of things from having zits to having no boyfriend. He’s a total butthead! I really want to skip this trip, but I know my parents will make me go. Is there any way I can get out of it? Can you help me figure out what to say?

answer:
I guess honesty is out of the question? If you’re old enough to go away on your own or with friends, that’s an angle you can use. Say you’ve planned a holiday with your best girlfriends already. Of course your parents won’t welcome your stance of independence with open arms, but you do have to assert yourself at some point. Otherwise you’ll be going on these family holidays till you’re ancient! If straight talking is really not possible, here are some ways to avoid hurting your parents’ feelings. Say you can’t get time off work or you need to take the summer to study because you really want to get ahead. Or get a summer job. If you really do have to go and there’s no way out, take an iPod along — then you won’t be able to hear your brother’s teasing and you’ll be entertained at the same time. Oh, and pack plenty of sunscreen. There’s really no need to get sunburnt in this day and age.
