Definition of contraception

Contraception, or birth control, deals with the science and methods of preventing pregnancy. Contra means against, so contraception denotes something that prevents, or is against, conception. The most effective method of birth control is abstinence—or avoiding sexual intercourse or other sexual activities that can cause sperm to come in contact with the vagina.
