Lip service

I’m 13 and am always getting cold sores - up to six at a time. No-one else in my family gets them, so why do I?

Answer:
Cold sores are caused by a virus called herpes simplex. The infection is often caught during childhood and, once you have it, you can keep on getting cold sores. They recur at times when you’re sick, run down or - stressed and usually appear on the lips, but can appear on the face and other parts of the body, too. Others in your family may be immune to herpes simplex, or may carry the virus but don’t get the symptoms. The virus can be transmitted through kissing or close contact when you have an open sore. While it’s natural to be self-conscious about cold sores, lots of people - even supermodels - get them! Ask your doctor about treatment.
