A Group called cliques

You always see groups of them hanging out around campus. It is not gangs. Cliques. Every school’s got ‘em. There are tons of different cliques. And, they can go by lots of different names. Check these out… they’re the types you’ll find everywhere. Where do you fit in?

Sport Girl cliques

These girls are into school sports: volley ball, track, tennis—you name it. They’re the ones who always have rackets sticking out of their backpacks and granola bars in their hands. They can
tell you how many fat grams are in every entree at the cafeteria, and they’re happiest when they’re in motion. In fact, they spend hours on the track or field during training season.

What’s cool about them: Their positive attitudes and their commitment, plus they help raise school spirit.

Why the world needs ‘em: They prove how strong girls really are. They motivate their friends to exercise and be healthy.

Skater chicks cliques

They love loud music, skater guys and snowboarding. You’ll notice them sporting a different color of hair every week—and it’s likely to be one of those gutsy, short cuts. Body piercing is another big thing with this crowd. Skater chicks like to express their individuality. They usually look kind of tough, but they’re just like everyone else. If she’s a really edgy skater chick, she actually skates.

What’s cool about them: They’re totally daring. These girls don’t worry about being different; in fact, they kind of like it.

Why the world needs ‘em: They prove that individuality is cool.

Alternatives cliques

Somewhere between grunge and flower children, these girls are into Kurt Cobain and all things natural. They like to wear baggy clothes, flannel and you might even catch them in their moms’ old bell bottoms. On the weekends, these girls are the happiest when they can go to concerts, hang out with friends among the sounds of nature, and avoid crowded shopping malls. They’re usually upon current social trends and care about making the world a safer place to live in.

What’s cool about them: They’ll tell you anything you need to know about the history of alternative and grunge music.

Why the world needs them: They remind us to go outside, take a deep breath and be thankful for the simple things in life: the grass, the trees, the sky…maybe even your little brother.

Big names on campus or preppies cliques

You’ve seen their names on posters and heard them talk during assemblies. These are the girls who lead in the school activities. Somebody’s gotta get the student council running. There has to be a homecoming committee so that the school float is killer. Next time you go to a school dance, check out the decorations and refreshments and appreciate the Big Names. They have big hearts and a lot of energy to help do things like paint old Mrs. Jones’ house or volunteer to teach elementary kids to “just say no.”

What’s cool about them: They’re incredibly motivated and they care about school activities.

Why the world needs ‘em: They’re good leaders and they may end up running the country when they’re older. (Hey, it’s about time for a woman president.)

Retro chicks cliques

You walk into homeroom and the first thing you notice is a lime green and shocking orange A-line dress. It’s one of the retro chicks in her costume du jour. You have to blink your eyes a few times to focus on the chalk board, and you think to yourself, I wish I had the guts to wear a dress like that. The retro chicks are the girls who make club-hopping a weekend job. They always know which dance clubs have the coolest underage nights and the best house music. And they can dance like nobody’s business.

What’s cool about them: They know how to wear every color of the rainbow in one great outfit.

Why the world needs them: They remind us all to dance, dance, dance. You can’t help but get happy.

Save the world cliques

If something is out of balance, they’ll try to fix it. These are the girls who always fight for a greater cause. You’ve seen them protesting the cafeteria because it doesn’t serve vegetarian meals. They refuse to dissect animals for biology because it’s cruel. And they’re usually up on the latest PC cause. If they’re serious about saving the world, you’ll never see them wearing leather or fur. It’s all about hemp clothes and natural fibers.

What’s cool about them: They’re not afraid to speak out, and they’re motivated.

Why the world needs ‘em: They remind us to not take clean air or water for granted. They’re into being fair to all creatures.

Fashion plates cliques

Clueless. Well, these girls may look like her, but they’ve got a lot more brains. The fashion plates are the cool girls who come to school in the most outrageous and up-to-the-minute outfits. They spend every spare penny of allowance at the mall—and most of their spare time, too. Guys like to check out the Fashion Plates because they always look great. Other girls watch ‘em too—to keep up on what’s new in the fashion world.

What’s cool about them: They’re fun to look at because they’re like a walking fashion magazine. They’re creative too.

Why the world needs ‘em: They’ve got lots of attitude, and they show the world how fun it is to look good.

Metal heads cliques

You can’t help but notice these girls with their all-black outfits, black fingernails, black lipstick, black concert T-shirts…OK, so they’re really into black—oh yeah, and heavy metal music. Some people think they look a little scary and hard to approach, but a vacant glare is usually just part of their “look.”

What’s cool about them: They use music as an outlet. Some people give heavy metal a bad rap, but thrashing to it is a good release of energy.

Why the world needs them: To remind us not to judge a book by its cover.
