PRESCRIPTION ADDICTION
WARNING SIGNS
When to wonder if you are becoming addicted:
-When you’ve been taking tranquillisers for a month or more, watch yourself.
-When your intake starts to increase - you need to take a bit more to get the same relief.
-If you experience unpleasant effects such as shaking, hot flushes or hallucinations if your supply is interrupted (by travel, being hospitalised for another reason, whatever).
-It’s abuse when the drug is in charge of you, instead of you being in charge of the drug.
BENZODIAZEPINES are ‘minor’ tranquillisers with more than 30 specific drugs. Some of the most common trade names are Valium, Serepax, Mogadon and Normison.
ANTI-DEPRESSANTS work by changing the chemical balance in the brain. The therapeutic effect of tricyclics - the most common kind - are not noticeable until the second or third week, but side-effects (such as ringing in the ears, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision and disorientation) may occur as a result of the initial dose. Common trade names are Prothiaden, Amitrip, Endep, Prozac, Tryptanol and Tofranil.
