SHOPPING FOR HEALTH
With over 60 former prescription drugs now available over the counter - the latest appear as Rhinolast for hayfever, Zinga for stomach ulcers and Perinal for haemorrhoids - it falls to pharmacists to keep an eye on who buys what. One reports an elderly woman asking for acetone, found in nail-polish remover, for her heartburn: an advertisement for Asilone had caused the confusion. Some GPs believe encouraging people to take more responsibility for their health may lead to their taking inappropriate medication.
Now pharmacy assistants will have had training to help them know when to call in the pharmacist - always ask to see one if in doubt. And don’t worry that everyone will know about your piles. Ask for a private chat. Every pharmacy has a quiet corner.
