Rules for sleepovers
Is your daughter hosting a slumber party? Don’t count on getting much sleep.. .but do follow these basic rules for keeping everyone safe and happy.
• Set limits ahead of time. Let your daughter know what’s acceptable before the party begins—for example, only age-appropriate movies, quiet time starting at midnight, no visits from boys, no leaving the house after a certain hour.
Remember, even good kids do bad things. Young guests have been known to bring a hidden stash of booze—or worse—to these gatherings. You don’t need to resort to pat downs or Breathalyzer tests, but you should do a spot check in the family room, the bedroom, or wherever the girls are hanging out.
• Let them eat. Snacks really do keep a gaggle of girls entertained. While you’re heating up the pizza, go ahead and eavesdrop. The girls are likely to chat as if you weren’t even in the room, and you’ll find out more about what’s going on in your daughter’s life than you’d imagined.
