According to James Widder, Ph.D., “Moist environments increase the body’s ability to heal wounds naturally.” A moist environment for wounds will help prevent tissue dehydration and cell death, accelerate blood vessel growth (which promotes healing), increase breakdown of dead tissue and blood clots and decrease the pain of the wound.

Should You Be Tested for Diabetes?

People at high risk for developing diabetes should be tested annually, says Alan J. Garber, M.D., professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Early diagnosis, before symptoms develop, means physicians can intervene to minimize complications, Garber says.

Are Breast Self-Exams Necessary?

Can a monthly self-exam help women prevent breast cancer? Maybe not, though it may help detect benign tumors.

For many years, researchers have said that women who self-examine their breasts periodically for tumor formation are less apt to develop breast cancer, since protective measures can be taken.

When Should Babies Get Solid Foods?

Introduce solid foods to infants when they are between 4 and 6 months old, and pick a time when there are few distractions and both you and the baby are relaxed, advises Corinne Montandon, Ph.D., a nutritionist at the USDA’s Children’s Research Center at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. It’s best to begin feeding them while they are sitting on your lap, she says.

- About 50% of all Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) occur in people under the age of 25.

- In a survey of college students, 13% of the students surveyed had more than 1 sex partner in the preceding
month.

- 62% reported using condoms “infrequently” or “never.”
