SKIN SWITCH

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

I tried some skincare products which really showed results. But after a year, they’ve stopped working. What’s happening?

Answer:
Your skin is changing. Not to worry, it does that all the time. When it changes drastically, it’s time for a switch.
When you start using a product or line, the results will tend to show clearly for a time. As skin gets “used” to it, results may become less obvious — but that doesn’t mean the product isn’t working.
But if there’s any extreme change in your skin — like breakouts or dryness — it can mean that skin has built up a resist-
ance to the product. What you decide to use next depends very much on your skin’s condition at the time.

HARD AS NAILS

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

I need a product — any product — that will strengthen my dry and weak nails.

Answer:
If your nails are prone to breaking and splitting, what you need is a good top coat and base coat, whether or not you use nail polish. They’ll hold nails intact and give them a healthy shine.
As for products that fortify nails with calcium, experts are frankly sceptical about their claims. They say the best way to strengthen nails is to take calcium pills as well as dairy products or vitamin supplements.
Just stick to good basic nail care. Moisturise your hands regularly (your nails and cuticles will get moisture too), and trim your nails once a fortnight. Long nails
can easily become weak nails.

LOST THAT LOVING FEELING?

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

I have been married for 3.5 years. In the last year, my husband has said he’s too tired whenever I try to initiate lovemaking. We have sex about once a week. Does he have a low sex drive or am I no longer attractive to him?

EXPLAINING THE PAIN

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Penetration hurts me. I thought the vagina is supposed to be stretchable.

Answer:
If you find intercourse painful, see your doctor to exclude any physical causes. Most problems can be solved and you will then be able to relax and enjoy sex without discomfort.

There are two possible causes for vaginal pain. Vaginismus is a distressing condition where the muscles around the vagina involuntarily contract, making sex either impossible or very painful.

An estimated one in 100 women experience this badly enough to justify treatment. No one is sure what causes this condition — theories include psychologically-damaging sexual
experiences during childhood, stress and heightened awareness of pain (if sex hurt the first time, you fear it always will hurt).

In many cases, vaginismus can be cured within weeks by painless therapy.
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina, which can have two origins — either an infection such as thrush (see your GP), or a psychological reason such as vaginismus.
