How to deal with news about tragedy happening to children

No one likes to read in the news or elsewhere about babies/children being abused or dying (either by the hands of someone, or “natural” causes). Parents feeling are much more magnified because instinct to protect their children.

Try to stay away from movies or tv shows where kids are in danger, because it can upsets you as much as hearing real-life stories.

Get involved in fundraising for a small charity that helps prevent blindness in the third world - it helps to feel like doing something to help, at least.

Whenever you have those feelings start to overwhelm you, instead of becoming sad, try to channel that feeling into an energy and pray for those who hurt and suffer all over the world. It helped. You can feel those feelings lessen when you turn the sadness into a prayer, whether specific or general.

Give blood. Blood save people live. It can make you feel that you are putting some of that healing energy back into the world.

If you find yourself reacting very strongly, and having feelings that seem to be even beyond empathy, I recommend that you do a little reading about empathy. Just find articles about empathy in google/yahoo.
