What to do if hurricane strikes

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

All major disaster relief agencies stress that the best weapon against the storm is being prepared, following instructions as they are issued and remaining calm.

BEFORE HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS
• Know the elevation of your area and learn the storm surge history if you are on the shore; the flooding history if you are near rivers, bayous or in a flood plain. If you live in a mobile home, always plan to relocate during a hurricane.
• Learn safe routes inland.
• Learn location of official emergency shelters.
• Determine where to move your boat in an emergency.
• Trim back dead wood from trees.
• Compile a complete inventory of personal property which will help in obtaining insurance settlements and/or tax deductions for losses. Don’t count on memory. List descriptions and take pictures. Store these and other important papers in waterproof containers or in your safe deposit box.
• Review your insurance policies to avoid misunderstandings later. Separate policies are needed for protection against wind and water damage, which people often do not realize until damage is done.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Hollywood Actrees

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Sarah Michelle is a professional with a strong sense of herself that, as an actress, she’s been presenting to the world since she was five. She’s polished - so much so that it’s hard to see what’s beneath the surface.

Sarah Michelle has a lot to be secure about, with the success of Buffy and the horror-flick hits / Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2. Not to mention the risque thriller Cruel Intentions with Ryan Phillippe. But perhaps her most scintillating role is one she hasn’t signed for yet: There’s talk of her jumping back on the fear train in the sequel to The Silence Of The Lambs.

How are you not like Buffy?
I’m more focused and more confident than her. But then when Buffy runs into horrible monsters, she has this great optimism. So when I feel sorry for myself, I just think, “What kind of quip would Buffy come up with here?” and that helps.

A dedicated student who graduated from a New York performing arts high school, Sarah Michelle was spotted by a talent scout at five, starred in her first commercial that same year, and worked in her first TV movie when she was six. At 11, she played opposite Matthew Broderick on Broadway, then at 15 she was the bitchy Kendall Hart on the US soap All My Children, a role she won an Emmy for in 1995. But then, amid rumours of friction with her TV mum, she quit and moved to Hollywood at 17.

7 Bad Things that are Good for You

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

For centuries, the tomato was thought to be poisonous. But, today, we consume more tomatoes than any other fruit or vegetable.
Things that many of us enjoy but try our best to avoid, like coffee and chocolate, an occasional drink or a between-meal snack, have been re-examined by medical researchers with new results.

Staying up all night
Psychologists have observed that depressed patients who are deprived of a night or two of sleep often find their spirits lifted. The reason is that bio-chemical changes brought about by sleeplessness possibly mimic those changes brought about by antidepressant drugs

A hot cup of coffee
Too much caffeine has been linked to any number of health problems. But experts largely agree that moderate coffee consumption - less than four cups a day - is safe. Better still, naval researchers have found that even if you slept well the night before, a morning cup of coffee makes you more alert and puts you in a better mood. There’s also an indication that coffee drinkers over 60 have better sex lives than non-coffee drinkers over 60.

Snacking between meals
Psychologists at Tufts University, in the US, found that a snack late in the afternoon can improve your ability to do tasks that require sustained attention. A snack before traveling also can prevent motion sickness.

Home Remedies

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

It is easy to dismiss old cures as ritual. But in fact, lots of them have more than a grain of truth in them. Many therapeutic herbs can be grown in your own garden, even as pot plants. All of these treatments are safe as a first-aid remedy for minor ailments, but do not use for more than a day or two if the condition is not improving - get proper advice for persistent problems.

COLDS: To ease the symptoms, add a pinch of cayenne pepper, cinnamon and a little grated fresh ginger root to a cup of boiling water. Drink this fiery mixture just before you go to bed and prepare for a hot, sweaty night. You will feel better by morning.

COUGHS: A favorite is garlic and honey. Thinly slice 8-10 peeled cloves of garlic and add them to a 500ml jar of clear honey. Leave for at least 24 hours, then take 1 or 2 teaspoons each hour.

You can protect yourself and your family from serious burn injuries in the home.

Choosing a good book in five minutes

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

1.Hold the book in your hand to get a feel of it and to know if it will last for the whole weekend.

2.Read the cover for a précis to see whether the subject interests you.

3.Ignore blurbs. Blurbs can be written by friends, and many writers have famous friends.

4.Read the first page of the book. Skim the second page. You should feel that the author is in command of the situation.

5.Then open the book at random, but not too far back - because you don’t want to ruin the ending - and read three paragraphs for style. After you’ve done this two or three times, you’ll have a pretty clear idea whether or not you will enjoy the book.

Happy reading.

Unusual Sexual Behavior

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Many people have different sexual tastes, but some preferences are against the law.

Anal Sex: It’s a sexual behavior dangerous because the anal tissues are fragile and tear easily, and the risk of contracting venereal diseases and AIDS through this practice is double that of vaginal sex. Anal sex between consenting adults of the opposite sex is not illegal. It is illegal between two men, because homosexuality is illegal in most country.

Transvestism and transsexualism sexual behavior: A transvestite is someone who enjoys dressing up in the clothes of the opposite sex, while having no actual desire to change sex (more common in men). Transvestites are rarely homosexual, normally married and live otherwise conventional lives. Transsexuals feel that they have been born in a body of the wrong sex. Some resort to a sex change operation.
