How to be a master mingler

When you arrive, scan the party layout. That way, you can excuse yourself from conversation (to refill a drink, use the rest room, etc.) without breaking eye contact. Wandering eyes make you look bored, even if all you’re really trying to do is smoothly transition to wherever you’re headed next. And looking more at ease should help you feel that way, too.

For the best conversation, start it yourself! Nervous? Look at it this way— you’re saving the person you chat up a lot of agony. Ninety-three percent of people say they’ve felt shy in certain social situations. Saying something that opens the door for dialogue breaks the ice for others.

To keep a tipsy flirt at bay, lock your elbow when shaking hands. You send a polite but firm message about your personal space—and prevent a potential drunk from planting a sloppy wet one on your face.

To end a conversation, perfect the “subtle shift.” People are afraid to move on because they don’t want to appear rude to the person they’re speaking with.
Try saying, “It’s been so much fun talking to you—but I don’t want to monopolize your time!” Now quick! Fa-la-la your way over to the coatrack and get the heck outta there.
