How long should lovemaking last?

Many of the women answer to our question “How long does it take your lover to climax?” had this answer: “Not long at all.” And for many of them, quick ejaculation could ruin the sexual experience. “It takes my husband two or three minutes tops-and he blames me because I can’t have an orgasm,” wrote one. Said another, “I felt so frustrated, bitter and hurt that I was very mean to my boyfriend, and I ended up cheating on him.”

In a good relationship, however, all wasn’t lost if the man didn’t last long during intercourse-particularly if he took his time during foreplay. “Our foreplay lasts anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour,” said one woman. “In all honesty, if I were forced to live without having intercourse with my husband-which only lasts five to ten minutes-it wouldn’t be the end of the world. The foreplay is so much more intimate and satisfying.”
The women who were most happy with the length of intercourse said that it lasts for 15 to 30 minutes with their partners. Those who said that it ended in less than three minutes felt slighted and frustrated by the experience, and even extensive and wonderful foreplay didn’t totally make up for the disappointment.
