Should you be scared of public toilet seats?

Admit it: Some of your best quad-toning comes from all those times you’ve squatted in rest room stalls, inches above the seat. But can you actually catch anything from a public privy?
You can’t contract an STD (and that includes AIDS), since your genitals don’t touch the toilet seat. But you can get a skin infection like impetigo or folliculitis if you have a small cut or sore on your buttock or thigh, says Theta Pattison, M.D., a dermatologist at Bellevue Woman’s Hospital near Albany, New York. So squat or use a disposable seat liner. Provided that the seat is dry, a liner will shield you from bacteria.
