How to have the confidence af a talk show host
1.Master the art of introductions.
When introducing yourself or a friend, it’s helpful to add a bit of information like “Jessica goes to your school” or “Sara just moved here from Kentucky.” It’s easier to get a conversation underway when people know a person’s name and at least one thing about him or her.
2.Draw people out and make them feel at ease.
Spend an hour watching Ricki, Oprah, Carnie or Gabrielle. Notice how they appear confident and in control? Developing a knack for asking interesting, thought-provoking questions can lead to cool conversations. People tend to open up and talk about themselves when the person asking the questions seems interested.
3.Be willing to share the spotlight.
The best conversations should be dialogues, not monologues. Most people want to be able to talk, as well as listen to what others have to say. Great conversations get underway when the talking-and–listening balance feels right.
4.Learn how to read cues.
One way a person learns to get along with others is to observe how people respond to him or her. A good conversationalist learns the cues that people can give off when they feel uncomfortable and backs off when things are not going well.
