Quake jolts Aceh`s western coast

Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - A mild earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted the western coast of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province on Thursday morning.

“The tremor that occurred at around 9 a.m. was strongly felt by people living in Meulaboh and Sinabang. But it caused no panick to the people,” Head of the Mata Ie Geophysics Station Syahnan said.

The quake`s epicentre was located at 4.64 degrees northern latitude and 96.13 degrees eastern longitude and some 65 kilometers beneath the sea level, he added.

The quake was felt by people in the two regions for 30 seconds. But according to the seismograph, it lasted for seven minutes, he said.

Thursday`s quake was the strongest to hit the province in the past two months, he said.

He said four quakes measuring between 4.1 - 5.7 on the Richter scale rattled Aceh in January and five quakes with a magnitude of between 3.7 - 5.7 occurred in February.

Aceh was hit hardest by a powerful earthquake followed by a gigantic tsunami on December 26, 2004, killing more than 170,000 people.
