East Java and Surabaya
East Java is a vital, energetic province with an earthy, forthright character. Its scenery is marked by startling contrasts between volcanic landscapes of stark and savage beauty and cool, elegant colonial towns set amongst finely sculpted plantations, between some of the most remote and untamed wilderness in Indonesia.
The region’s most dramatic destination is Mount Bromo, an ancient volcanic massif, a smouldering pile of cinders set in a startlingly empty sea of black sand and surrounded by sheer cliffs. Bromo is one hour’s drive from Surabaya, and is offered as a popular short package tour by all Surabaya-based tour operators.
East Java’s cosmopolitan capital city of Surabaya is set around a medieval, yet still fully functional, harbour, and is a dynamic, modern city, where gleaming skyscrapers cast their shadows across Indian and Arabian markets, old mosques and temples, and the tombs of Islamic saints.
Hotel Equator Surabaya provides a world of convenience for both business and leisure travellers. What is unique about the Hotel Equator is its extensive tropical gardens and its self-contained, spacious, all-suite bungalow accommodation, perfect for both long-staying business and family travellers. Each luxury cottage suite has its own living room and private balcony overlooking the hotel’s tropical gardens and includes individual controlled air conditioning, mini refrigerator, direct dial telephone, international satellite television, and in-house movie programs. The Hotel Equator has an unsurpassed country club ambience even though it is set in the heart of Surabaya, just 20 minutes drive from Juanda International Airport, 15 minutes from the central business district and, 25 minutes from Tanjung Perak Harbour.
Surrounded by highland plantations growing apples and roses, Malang is a cool, colonial-era town, where the Dutch have left a legacy of canaries and pictures of windmills. The town is well worth a visit if only to catch a glimpse of the white-jacketed waiters continuing to serve kaastengel and vleeskroketj in art deco cafes and hotels built at the turn of the century.
Thirty minutes by ferry from Surabaya’s Tanjung Perak harbour lies the dry, harsh island of Madura where in the harvest season, between August until September, farmers hold bull races. Clinging precariously to a sled and cracking their whips furiously, drivers urge their beasts on to speeds of up to 50 km/h as they compete with teams from opposing villages. Begun as a method to improve the breeding stock, the races have evolved into an exciting show in which bulls are decorated with colourful headdresses and sashes.
